In this presentation, Dr. Kalenda Eaton will discuss African American responses to the federal Homestead Act of 1862. The talk will focus on Homesteading in the Great Plains region, examples of communities formed, and late-19th-century discussions of freedom and self-determination.
Kalenda Eaton is a Professor of African American Studies at the University of Oklahoma and Director of Oklahoma Research for the Black Homesteader Project. She is a scholar of Black literary studies, studies of the American West, and Black social and cultural history. Eaton is noted for her teaching and public scholarship on African Americans in the Great Plains region.
