LEAD Seminars are held during the school year in person or online and are led by historians or education specialists who are content experts in history, geography, government or civics.  Through Seminars, teachers explore a range of approaches to historical thinking and classroom practices related to the annual theme.  Teachers earn six hours of professional development for each Seminar.

Each LEAD colloquium engages teachers in 3 days of content-focused historical inquiry related to the annual theme.  It is led by a three-person team that includes an academic historian, a master classroom teacher, and a learning/curriculum specialist. Teachers earn 18 hours of professional development for each colloquium.

The LEAD program provides two days each summer for teachers to develop learning activities and write curriculum for their classroom.  Teachers utilize the innovative teaching techniques, field experiences and resources of the LEAD program to create and disseminate content-rich and engaging lessons.

July 11-15, 2022
The Cold War and Its Legacy (1960 - present): Christian Appy, University of Massachusetts Amherst (historian), Michael Neel, Peabody College, Vanderbilt University (education specialist), and Kelley Brown, Massachusetts (master teacher)

LEAD teachers travel to historic sites to experience periods and geographic settings relevant to the yearly topic.  Field Studies are anchored in rich historical content and include opportunities for active learning and interaction with historians, museums and history education specialists. Teacher’s ability to articulate history to students and develop engaging lessons for their classroom is increased.

June 6-10, 2022: A Multi-faceted American Heritage: Colonization, Conflict, and Compromise (1607-1781)

3-day Field Study:
Feb. 18-20, 2022 (Rodeo Day Weekend): The Civil Rights Movement in Alabama (Montgomery, Selma, & Birmingham)
