Understanding Latinx history is critical to the story that draws us together as diverse Americans. In this webinar, Paul Ortiz will cover champions in Latinx history, drawing on primary source documents that can be used in the classroom. Ortiz will highlight how Latinx intellectuals and organizers have historically urged the United States to build bridges of solidarity with the nations of the Americas.
Paul Ortiz is a professor of history and director of the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program at the University of Florida. He is a National Archives Distinguished Scholar in Latinx History for 2022-2023. He is also a PEN-award-winning writer and the author or co-author of five books including, Emancipation Betrayed: The Hidden History of Black Organizing and White Violence in Florida from Reconstruction to the Bloody Election of 1920, and People Power: History, Organizing, and Larry Goodwyn’s Democratic Vision in the Twenty-First Century. Ortiz’s book An African American and Latinx History of the United States was identified by Fortune Magazine as one of the “10 books on American history that actually reflect the United States.” Ortiz is also a veteran of the United States Armed Forces.
