In Support of the Missouri Council for History Education Response to Missouri HB 1141, Amendment 3

The National Council for History Education supports the work/statement of the Missouri Council for History Education (MOCHE) in response to Missouri HB 1141, Amendment 3. “The proposed amendment contradicts state standards and would ban important resources that help teachers lift American voices which have too often been silenced, oppressed, and marginalized.” To further the work of our colleagues, NCHE is concerned that restricting/limiting the resources available to teachers is a grave mistake. It ends the intellectual inquiry into questions associated with history and positions teachers to present incomplete historical narratives. Further, this limits students’ opportunities and abilities to engage in critical skills associated with historical study that enable them to contribute to communities, now and in the future.
