Description

The American West conjures images of gold, grit, and progress, but too often omits histories of native and immigrant populations. Join educators from the Museum of the Chinese in America in contemplating the impact of discriminatory gold rush-era legislation and the legacy of the rallying cry “The Chinese Must Go!” on Chinese and Chinese American populations. Explore popular media, songs, political cartoons and other primary sources that shed light on Chinese Exclusion, boycotts, expulsions, xenophobia, and violence in the West and Pacific Northwest.
The Museum of Chinese in America is a nonprofit education and cultural institution that presents the living history, heritage, culture, and diverse experiences of Chinese Americans through exhibitions, educational services and public programs. The core exhibition With a Single Step: Stories in the Making of America discusses over 160 years of Chinese American history.
