NCHE Partners with the Library of Congress

The National Council for History Education (NCHE) is excited to announce a new partnership with the Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources program (TPS). As of February 2025, NCHE serves as the director of one of the Library’s newest regional granting entities, the Great Plains Region. The Great Plains region is one of six across the country whose role is to provide subgrants to organizations seeking to include Library resources in their educational programming.
As director of the Great Plains Region, NCHE will provide grants of up to $25,000 to organizations and institutions within the following five states: Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Oklahoma. These regional grants will help fund projects that expand and explore innovative methods of teaching and learning with Library of Congress materials. Eligible applicants can include educational institutions, cultural organizations, historical societies or museums, community or civic groups, libraries, and literacy organizations.
“We are thrilled to be a part of the TPS regional grant network in this capacity,” said Jessica Ellison, NCHE Executive Director. “As longtime TPS grantees, we know the value of the regional programs and their power to support a great variety of projects illuminating the Library’s collections. NCHE cannot wait to begin partnerships within the states of the Great Plains region!”
NCHE is currently accepting Notices of Intent to apply for funding, and anticipates granting all funds by May 2025, for projects that will end no later than May 2026. For more information, contact Great Plains TPS Project Director Kathleen Barker at kathleen@ncheteach.org.

About the Teaching with Primary Sources Program (TPS)
The Teaching with Primary Sources program has been the Library of Congress’s premier educational outreach program. The goals of the program have included providing instructional materials, tools, education and professional development that enhance teachers’ ability to integrate digitized primary sources from the Library of Congress into instruction that builds student literacy, critical thinking skills, content knowledge and ability to conduct original research. Since the establishment of the Center for Learning, Literacy and Engagement in 2018, and the release of the Library’s 2019-23 and 2024-2028 Strategic Plans, the TPS goals are both influencing and reflecting the Library’s broader outreach goals. TPS Consortium members are valued as “Connectors” who help the Library achieve its vision of connecting to all Americans. www.loc.gov/teachers
