This webinar examines the unintended consequences of Brown v. Board, including the displacement of Black educators, uneven implementation, and the long-lasting effects on educational equity. Participants will engage with oral history clips from community members who experienced desegregation firsthand to deepen understanding of this complex moment in U.S. history. We will conclude with a live Q&A to explore questions and connections raised throughout the presentation.

Jason R. McGowan received his B.A. in English and M.A. in Liberal Arts from Middle Tennessee State University, where he currently serves as the Oral Historian for the Albert Gore Research Center. He received grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Western National Parks Association, the Tennessee Department of Tourism Development, and the National Park Service’s Brown v. Board National Historic Site. Jason was also a proud participant in the inaugural Getting Word Summer Institute at the Historic Monticello. He organized the Middle Tennessee African American Oral History Project, the Fight for Equality in Education Oral History Project, the Tennessee Rosenwald School Oral History Project, and the Brown v Board of Education Oral History Project. Jason had assembled and preserved over eighty interviews that recount the lives and diverse experiences of Black Americans who lived, worked, and attended public schools during the era of legal segregation and the transition to desegregation.
