This webinar will provide an insight into the documentary sources for the early conflict, setting the archival record in the wider context of British governance of its American colonies and the breakdown in the relationship between government and the governed. It will show how documents provide an insight into both events and attitudes to reveal how the early conflict rapidly deteriorated into all-out war. It will also show why working with original sources is so valuable for teaching colleagues and their students.

Andrew Payne is Head of Education and Outreach at The UK National Archives where he leads on services for schools, teachers, families, young people and communities. As a former history teacher, trainer and resource developer he combines all of his previous experience to open up one of the great archival collections in the world and make it accessible for new audiences through innovative approaches to teaching with original documents. He has led programmes with teachers and archivists around the world, and is a firm believer in helping students understand the connection between time, place, people and events, and how these are represented in archival collections as the source for historians to create accounts of the past. Andrew holds a degree in Medieval & Modern History, a PGCE for secondary History and IT, a Masters in Business Administration, all from the University of Liverpool, and is a Fellow of the Historical Association.
